Sailboat SundayHi. I recently purchased a painting entitled “Sailboat Sunday Kaneohe Bay”. It is signed with the monogram “HBA”, and dated ‘54. I don’t even know if this artist was Hawaiian or not, but thought you would be a good place to begin my search. Following in another email is a photo of the signature on the back of the canvas. a photo of the front is attached. Any help would as to who this artist is would be greatly appreciated.

mother-childI am looking for any information I can get on the artist who did this picture.  I was told this was a Hawaiian “Mother & Child” done by “Stickney” I believe it says.  I love the work and would like to know if there is more out there, if the artist is still alive, and if so could I contact him or her.  My cousin got this picture along with another “Mother & Child” done in charcoal, and a smaller “Lady in a Hawaiian dress with long straight hair and a large straw hat.  My cousin, Joyce Walzack, was an interior decorator and lived in Hawaii for many years before her death. I believe she got them in the ’50’s or early ’60’s. I appreciate any help I can get.  Sincerely, Mickey D

I am looking for a artist named June Egan her Tongan name was sune?  June did tapa cloth in her paintings by pounding inner bark of the paper mulberry tree against a flatten log with a wooden mallet using a brown dye called tongo.  I have 4 of her art works now I am trying to locate some more.  June had a show in 1977 at LeMaroi Gallery in which she sold sixty of her art pieces during one month showing.  She is Australian born I believe.  I would appreciate any information you may have in the comment section below.  Diana Leffler

Lilikoi Painting by Anna Good

Lilikoi by Anna Good

I have been drawing inspiration from the beauty of Wailea’s rich tropical gardens, pathways and koi ponds since I moved to South Maui three years ago.  During that time I have completed a number of paintings depicting Wailea tropical gardens. This, however is my first serious collection of work dedicated to the beauty of Wailea and its gardens. The collection consists of 17 pieces covering a spectrum of sizes.

Here are some of my favorites. – Anna Good

Hilo Art MuseumAloha HawaiiArt.com,

I just wanted to introduce myself.  My name is Stephen Davey, and I’m the
Director of the Hilo Art Museum.  We have some great pieces done by some
famous artists, but we don’t have enough art done by Hawaiians.  I was
wondering if some of the artists you’re involved with may like to submit
their work for possible inclusion in our permanent collection.
Also, in case anyone is interested in seeing a really beautiful display, we
have the Italian artist Mirkò coming in at the end of February to hold an
exhibition at the Hilo Palace Theater.  The collection is dedicated to
Hawaii, its people and its customs.  It’s sure to be a great event.  More
info about that is available on our site.  But back to my initial point.
Please pass the invitation along to your artists for submitting their work,
and thank you for your time.

Mahalo,

Stephen

mike_sakamoto1Mike Sakamoto who was one of the very first artists to give a new local website called HawaiiArt.com a chance to show his work  passed away this week at 59 after a battle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma.  There are few artists on our site that I actually get to meet but Mike insisted, along with sandwich’s and drinks which he brought to ensure that my girlfriend and I would not go hungry.  That’s who Mike was.  A giver and the type of person who always made sure those around him were provided for.

Mike was best known as a fisherman due to the locally produced fishing TV program entitled Fishing Tales with Mike Sakamoto. I knew him as an artist who felt that it was more important to make his work and talents available to those that loved art rather then artificially increasing the value of his work though attitude and artistic elitism.  Mike was a great local guy, with a love of people, and a natural talent with a rod, reel, or paintbrush.

HawaiiArt.com will continue to support Kat, Mike’s wife, in any way we can involving Mike’s Art.  Some great pieces from his collection are still available  although shipping will be delayed so his family has time to deal with his tragic loss.  Please click here to enjoy this sampling from one of Hawaii’s great painters.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Jan. 25 at Dodo Mortuary in Hilo.  Friends may call after 1 p.m. at the mortuary.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers or monetary gifts, memorial donations be made to the Pacific Islands Fisheries Group, 150 Hamakua Drive, Kailua, HI 96734.

About 5 years ago I visited Kauai and purchased a beautiful wood carving of a little bird.  It had wire legs and stood on a nice piece of wood.  The bottom was signed by Russell.  My home was destroyed by fire in November and  that was one of my most cherished pieces.  Do you know when i could obtain another piece of his work?  It was made of several different woods of different colors. Kind regards, Sally Cairns
